July 7, 1948– The Cleveland Indians of the American League of Major League Baseball, sign pitcher Leroy "Satchel" Paige. Just one year earlier, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he played 1st base for the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National League. Satchel Paige had been one of Negro League Baseball’s brightest stars.
